Floreana Island, Thursday 10th December, 2009: The Post Office

Before organised mail services were established, it was not uncommon for sailors to leave mail
at recognised drops like this. Mail was left in a barrel or some other protection. Later ships'
crews would check what had been left, and if they were going nearby, would hand-deliver
it when they arrived. This was the case at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, in the
16th century, for instance. We left cards here on Floreana and they were delivered 2nd Jan.
